  The Getty Villa

  As Senior Project Manager in charge of the renovation of the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa, Carvalheiro provided direction in all matters pertaining to its reconstruction to become the permanent home for the Getty's Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities collections. In close collaboration with the Getty's Antiquities Department and the design architects, Machado and Silvetti, he supervised and reviewed development of design and construction plans for compliance with standards, programming criteria, and overall design integrity. Also included as part of his scope were the restoration of all exterior murals, and the construction and planting of the Villa Gardens.

  In addition, Carvalheiro managed the development of the Villa's Exhibition Furniture program. Responsibilities included negotiation and management of an overseas contract, and supervision of production.

  June Street House

  Originally built in 1915, the June St. House had been extensively altered in the late ‘50s and then again in the ‘70s. With our remodel, all previous alterations were removed leaving only the original structure, the adobe-style front building.

  Initial program studies nearly doubled the square footage of the home. In order to absorb the expansion created by the new program, and to meet the H.P.O.Z. requirement of “zero impact on street presence” of the home, the additional mass was set back on the site by incorporating a new courtyard. This gesture made the new structure imperceptible to the neighborhood.

  A minimal approach was taken with the development of all exterior and interior elevations while carefully incorporating existing Moorish-influenced elements. This made it possible for us to incorporate an eclectic mixture of furniture and interior finishes. Also, new openings on the ground level connect multiple interior and exterior spaces allowing the house and garden to function as one.

  Reconfiguration of the landscape included the addition of an entry staircase and gravel parking court in front. The existing pool in the back was integrated by aligning landscape features with key elements within the home. Large specimen plants were preserved, but relocated to enhance views, and new plantings were incorporated throughout to complement the resulting streamlined architectural language of the home.

  Angels Walk Los Angeles

  Following the success of its Angels Walk Guide Book, Angels Walk LA held a competition for the design of its new markers to further commemorate the history, culture, and architecture of several Los Angeles neighborhoods. We were awarded the project, and set out to develop a street marker that references key historic architectural elements while incorporating information about each particular site. The resulting design introduced a layered human-scaled object to our city streets that is simultaneously inviting and virtually indestructible.

  With a very tight budget and the generous donation of time by several civic entities, Angels Walk LA continues to grow and educate people throughout the city. Angels Walk Markers can be found throughout the neighborhoods of Bunker Hill, Union Station, Hollywood, Chinatown, Figueroa and Wilshire Boulevard, as well as San Pedro. Future walks include North Hollywood, Crenshaw, and Highland Park neighborhoods.
